Under the Big Green Roof: October's Picture Book Reviews

The Most Magnificent Thing
Ashley Spires

The girl has a wonderful idea. "She is going to make the most MAGNIFICENT thing! She knows just how it will look. She knows just how it will work. All she has to do is make it, and she makes things all the time. Easy-peasy!" But making her magnificent thing is anything but easy, and the girl tries and fails, repeatedly. Eventually, the girl gets really, really mad. She is so mad, in fact, that she quits. But after her dog convinces her to take a walk, she comes back to her project with renewed enthusiasm and manages to get it just right.

~*~

I adored this picture book!  Filled with illustrations that made me grin, The Most Magnificent Thing teaches a wonderful lesson about perseverance and working through the bumps in things, even when it seems like your idea has no merit.  I especially love how Spires shows the nameless little girl's progression from a brilliant idea, to anger over it not working the way she wants, to giving up, and all the way around to success.

Definitely a book for your storytime library, and a book I look forward to adding to my own library for future munchkins.

Excerpt

The food looked good and the place seemed to be rather popular, so I went in. I walked up to the counter and ordered my food by raising four fingers, the number on the menu that corresponded to noodle soup with breast meat. Given that the shop was so close to the back packer area, the people who worked there were no doubt used to clueless tourists, and the lady taking my order seemed to understand what I was trying to ask for with a minimum of fuss. I also grabbed a large bottle of water and paid for my lunch.

A few minutes later, a steaming bowl was handed to me. I chose a stool at a bench that faced the street so that I could people-watch while I ate. As I expected, the broth was quite tasty but I struggled to pick up the vermicelli noodles with my chopsticks. However, given that everyone around me was busily slurping on their noodles, I did not feel so bad having to do the same.

After eating my food and drinking a lot of water I felt much better, so I continued with my walk. However, I soon found myself in trouble, as I came to my first busy road, where there was a constant stream of traffic. Although I was at a crossing that occasionally showed a green pedestrian light, traffic would continue to flow past. A cyclo driver, who had been watching me for a few minutes, took pity on me and came up to offer some advice.

“You cannot wait for no traffic. There is always traffic. You just walk and don’t stop.”

The look I gave him in response to this piece of advice, probably gave the impression that I thought he was insane.

“OK. Come with me.”

Waiting for a small gap in the traffic so we would not be immediately run down, he stepped off the curve and began pushing his cyclo across the road. I started walking with him. I noticed that once he started to walk across the road he no longer paid any attention to the traffic around him. I was not so blasé. However, as we moved across the road, I noticed that the motorcycle traffic just weaved around us. Once we had passed halfway and the traffic was now coming straight towards me, he saw my hesitation and called out,

“Keep walk! Keep walk! You stop. You get hit!”

That was all the motivation I needed to keep going. Then, and I thought rather unnecessarily, he added,

“They more scared of damage hitting you”

I turned, expecting him to be laughing at his joke, but surprisingly, he seemed to be quite serious.

Once we had safely crossed, I thanked him for his help. Then came the sales pitch I had been expecting.

“Have you been on cyclo before?”

“No.”

I tried to appear slightly uninterested. In reality, as soon as I had first seen one in the taxi trip over, I had wanted to have a ride in a cyclo! For the uninitiated, the cyclo looks like a reverse tricycle. A single passenger sits in a low, open front seat and the driver pedals the cyclo sitting to the rear and looking over the head of the passenger.

Review

I love this book!  It's a wonderful blend of travel guide, memoir, and collection of recipes.  The Hungry Traveller does a great job of sharing his experiences in world traveling, giving the reader a beyond the standard guidebook sight of the world.  My all time favorite part were the recipes he included, because one of my favorite parts about traveling is getting to try new foods.  On the flip side, when I fall in love with the unique foods and then leave them behind on my return, it makes me miss my travels; so, having some of his favorite recipes included was a fantastic touch.

Definitely a book to add to my library, because I want those recipes, and his fun take on his experiences, available for me to reread!

NaNoWriMo 2015 is just around the corner!!!

As many of you may know, National Novel Writing Month, aka NaNoWriMo, is just around the corner.  What you may not know, is that I've been a participant of NaNoWriMo's unique blend of noveling madness for the past twelve years.  As such, I will be taking a mini-hiatus from my regular every other day posting for the month of November.

I will definitely be posting during November; however, I'm not 100% certain, as a new blogger, that I'll be able to maintain the review rate I've been keeping to while I try to pound out 50,000+ words in thirty days.  I'm also sure you'll be hearing from me, as I bitch and moan about my monstrosity of a novel.

So, don't worry about my somewhat silence, I'll be back from NaNoWriMo land in December, and resume the every other day reviewing pace.

Happy NaNoWriMo to all participating!!

*if you're doing NaNo, I'm under renee_archer, and always love new buddies

Review: Crimson Peak - Nancy Holder

Title: Crimson Peak
Author: Nancy Holder
ISBN: 9781783296293
Publication Date: October 20, 2015
Publisher: Titan Books
Source: purchased

In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds...and remembers.

Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak. From acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro.

~*~

I've enjoyed Nancy Holder' writing since I first discovered her through her Buffy novelizations, so I was quite excited to find out she was the author behind the Crimson Peak novelization.  Having seen the film itself prior to picking up the novelization I already knew where the story was heading; however, Holder has brought a good amount of inner monologue and scenes which weren't in the theater release, and made this story all the more wonderful.

Definitely a movie novelization I enjoyed equally as well as del Toro's visually stunning film.

Title: Welcome to Night Vale

Review: Spinning Starlight - R.C. Lewis

"Clever girl."

Title: Spinning Starlight
Author: R.C. Lewis
ISBN: 9781423185154
Publication Date: October 6, 2015
Publisher: Disney Hyperion

Sixteen-year-old heiress and paparazzi darling Liddi Jantzen hates the spotlight. But as the only daughter in the most powerful tech family in the galaxy, it's hard to escape it. So when a group of men show up at her house uninvited, she assumes it's just the usual media-grubs. That is, until shots are fired.

Liddi escapes, only to be pulled into an interplanetary conspiracy more complex than she ever could have imagined. Her older brothers have been caught as well, trapped in the conduits between the planets. And when their captor implants a device in Liddi's vocal cords to monitor her speech, their lives are in her hands: One word and her brothers are dead.

~*~

One of my favorite fairy tales is Hans Christian Andersen's The Wild Swans, so I was beyond excited when I read the above synopsis for Spinning Starlight.  And I must say, I was not disappointed with Lewis' retelling of my favorite.

I really like Liddi's character.  She was both a really strong character, and so very insecure about her own self worth, making her feel true to life and three dimensional.  Liddi felt like someone I could relate to.  Someone I could see myself being friends with, if she lived in the same world I do.  Lewis does a fantastic job of portraying her struggle of coming into her own, while trying to come to terms with what the public world was constantly demanding of her.

And even though she spends the majority of the novel forced into silence, lest she kill her brothers, Liddi still manages to be a very complex character.  Watching Liddi try to navigate a foreign world without the ability to speak was both humorous and frustrating because Lewis wrote it in such a way as to make you want to reach out and help her.

I did find Tiav a bit flat in comparison to Liddi, but loved him just as much.  He was such a human character, that the gut wrenching misunderstanding in the latter half of the novel was completely believable in its drama.

Further, I adored the strong familial ties Lewis crafted between Liddi and her eight brothers, and Tiav and his mother.  It gave this retelling a true sense of the backbone of the fairy tale, which to me is the relationship between the siblings.  I loved the strength of Liddi's brothers, and the sense of self they gave to her, even when they weren't present.

My only complaint is about the amount of science speak that's interspersed throughout the novel.  I found it to be a bit distracting as a whole; however, I'm not much a science type gal, so that may be a personal preference coming into play.

Spinning Starlight was a wonderful retelling of a classic, lesser known fairy tale, and I look forward to not only adding it to my library, but also gobbling up Stitching Snow.

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Review: Merry Mary - Ashley Farley

"Miracles come in all shapes and sizes.  You were Mary's miracle, not the other way around."

Title: Merry Mary
Author: Ashely Farley
ISBN: 97810986167225
Publication Date: October 15, 2015
Publisher: Smashwords Edition
Source: NetGalley

Investigative journalist Scottie Darden is photographing the homeless for her Lost Souls series when she makes a discovery that could change her life forever. Under a makeshift tent in subzero temperatures in a downtown city park, she finds a woman's dead body with her infant child. Without her cell phone to call for help, Scottie makes the split-second decision to take the baby home. Her initial instinct is to provide the baby with food and shelter until her family can be located. But as her fondness for the baby grows, she finds herself facing a life on the run or worse—prison time for abduction.

~*~

Merry Mary is a quick read, being that it's only an 89 page novella.  However, Farley still packs quite a whallop of emotion into the too short story.  I spent the story torn between shaking some sense into Scottie, and being in complete accord with the insanity her biological clock insisted was 'right'.

Further, I really loved the tight knit family bonds Merry Mary portrayed, both with Scottie and her parents, and Scottie and her brother.  Everything about them felt true to life, and very believable.  Scottie's husband, Brad, was probably the only person in the novella I didn't like - he came off as immature and lame, which I imagine was the idea of his portrayal.

Definitely a well thought out novella, with characters I want to see more of in more of Farley's writing.  I eagerly look forward to the next story of hers that I get the opportunity to step into.

Review: Carry On - Rainbow Rowell

“At Watford, Magic is just the air we breathe. It's not what separates us from each other; it's what keeps us together.”

Title: Carry On
Author: Rainbow Rowell
ISBN: 9781250049551
Publisher: St Martin's Griffin
Publication Date: October 6, 2015
Source: Purchased

Simon Snow just wants to relax and savor his last year at the Watford School of Magicks, but no one will let him. His girlfriend broke up with him, his best friend is a pest, and his mentor keeps trying to hide him away in the mountains where maybe he’ll be safe. Simon can’t even enjoy the fact that his roommate and longtime nemesis is missing, because he can’t stop worrying about the evil git. Plus there are ghosts. And vampires. And actual evil things trying to shut Simon down. When you’re the most powerful magician the world has ever known, you never get to relax and savor anything.

Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, a mystery and a melodrama. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story — but far, far more monsters.

Review: Fat Cat Art - Svetlana Petrova

23398958

Title: Fat Cat Art
Author: Svetlana Petrova and Zarathustra
ISBN: 9780399174780
Publication Date: September 15, 2015
Publisher: Tarcher
Source: Tarcher

Internet meme meets classical art in Svetlana Petrova’s brilliant Fat Cat Art. Featuring her twenty-two-pound, ginger-colored cat Zarathustra superimposed onto some of the greatest artworks of all time, Petrova’s paintings are an Internet sensation. Now fans will have the ultimate full-color collection of her work, including several never-before-seen pieces, to savor for themselves or to give as a gift to fellow cat lovers.

~*~

This book is fantastic!  I love the way Petrova incorporates Zarathustra, her ginormous ginger tabby, into the famous works of art.  And Zarathustra's commentary joins all of the 'true' paintings with all of the snark you'd expect from a cat.  This is definitely a book I'm thrilled to add to my collection of cat-centric books.

Waiting on Wednesday #5 - The Vatican Princess

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.

Author: C. W. Gortner
ISBN: 9780345533975
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Publication Date: February 9, 2016

From Goodreads:

For fans of Philippa Gregory and Alison Weir, a gripping novel that follows the extraordinary life of young Lucrezia Borgia, the legendary Renaissance Pope Alexander’s beautiful daughter. Was she the heartless seductress of legend? Or merely an unsuspecting pawn in a familial web, forced to choose between loyalty and her own survival?

Glamorous and predatory, the Borgias became Italy’s most ruthless and powerful family, electrifying and terrorizing their 15th-century Renaissance world.

To this day, Lucrezia Borgia is known as one of history’s most notorious villainesses, accused of incest and luring men to doom with her arsenal of poison.

International bestselling author C.W. Gortner’s new novel delves beyond the myth to depict Lucrezia in her own voice, from her pampered childhood in the palaces of Rome to her ill-fated, scandalous arranged marriages and complex relationship with her adored father and her rival brothers—brutal Juan and enigmatic Cesare.

This is the dramatic, untold story of a papal princess who came of age in an era of savage intrigue and unparalleled splendor, and whose courage led her to overcome the fate imposed on her by her Borgia blood.

~*~

Why this is on my list:

There's just something about the history of the Borgias that just grabs me hook, line, and sinker.  And this summary sounds so amazing, I cannot wait to tear through this novel!

Author: Jennifer Brown
ISBN: 9780062324436
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publication Date: January 19, 2016

From Goodreads:

Nikki Kill does not see the world like everyone else. In her eyes, happiness is pink, sadness is a mixture of brown and green, and lies are gray. Thanks to a rare phenomenon called synesthesia, Nikki’s senses overlap, in a way that both comforts and overwhelms her.

Always an outsider, just one ‘D’ shy of flunking out, Nikki’s life is on the fast track to nowhere until the night a mysterious call lights her phone up bright orange—the color of emergencies. It’s the local hospital. They need Nikki to identify a Jane Doe who is barely hanging on to life after a horrible attack.

The victim is Peyton Hollis, a popular girl from Nikki’s school who Nikki hardly knows. One thing is clear: Someone wants Peyton dead. But why? And why was Nikki’s cell the only number in Peyton’s phone?

As she tries to decipher the strange kaleidoscope of clues, Nikki finds herself thrust into the dark, glittering world of the ultra-rich Hollis family, and drawn towards Peyton’s handsome, never-do-well older brother Dru. While Nikki’s colors seem to help her unravel the puzzle, what she can’t see is that she may be falling into a trap. The only truth she can be sure of is that death is a deep, pulsing crimson.

Shade Me is award-winning author Jennifer Brown’s first book in a thrilling suspense series about Nikki Kill.

~*~

Why this is on my list:

I am super, super excited about this book!  Everything I've read by Jennifer Brown has been amazing.  And I love books where characters have unique skills, and synesthesia is nothing if not unique.  Add to that the fact that this is a thriller?  I am so sold on this book and I want it in my greedy book loving hands like yesterday!

What are you waiting on?

Author Visits #1 - Ferrett Steinmetz

As a few of you may know, I loved The Flux by Ferrett Steinmetz to bits for indulging my obsessive nature with a world where obsessions breed a certain style of magic.  I mean, what could be cooler than having the things you love the most, be they video games or cats, warp your world and give you the ability to perform magic governed by them?  If you don't know how much I enjoyed Steinmetz's second novel, check out my review here.

So, you can imagine my excitement when Steinmetz's publisher, Angry Robot Books, contacted me with an opportunity to interview him as a part of his blog tour celebrating the release of The Flux.  I spent a good week debating which questions to ask him, how to make myself sound all posh and not gibber like I normally do when speaking with authors, and then, spending the time waiting to hear back from him chewing at my nails nervously.

Now that I've recovered from the flailing, and the jittery nerves, it's my pleasure to welcome Ferrett Steinmetz to Books, Cats, and Caffeine, and help celebrate the release of The Flux:
